SUTTON TOWN DEFEAT BRAMHALL TO WIN U16 NATIONALS

Sutton Town became the first team from the Midlands to win an ENG Netball Cup national event after they defeated Bramhall in the final of this U16 competition. However, it wasn't all plain sailing for Sutton Town, which started with a loss and had to squeeze past AP Saints in the semi-finals in extra time. In the end, though, the best team won, and it added another national title to the Sutton Town trophy cabinet in 2024.

Group A
Sutton Town started severely after losing to local rivals Little Sutton. However, Little Sutton's dominant performance saw them win 10-7. One of the competition favourites, Ryland, played Southern champions Magic in their opening game, and a competitive match saw a 9-8 win for Ryland.

After three games, Ryland continued their good form with another two wins to top the group. After their poor start, Sutton Town grabbed back-to-back wins to give themselves a chance to finish top.

After such a positive start, Little Sutton only managed another point after a draw with Hatfield. Magic, who won our Southern Finals, could only manage a single win, which meant they finished bottom, and Hatfield, like Little Sutton, finished on three points to guarantee themselves a place in the quarter-final play-offs. The final game of the group saw Ryland, who were unbeaten, take on fellow West Midlands side Sutton Town. Ryland knew a loss would mean they wouldn't hold the top spot due to Sutton Town's goal difference. A poor performance from Ryland saw them lose comfortably, and after a slow start, Sutton Town topped the group.

Group B
This group was labeled the Group of Death, with Leeds Athletic, AP Saints, and Bramhall all pitted against each other. Leeds Athletic, who won our Northern Finals, started brightly against Herts Dyanos, winning 13-5. AP Saints brushed aside Suffolk Meteor, who stepped in for Altrincham. Bramhall also defeated Suffolk Meteor in their opening game to make all three wins for the teams expected to compete for the top spot.

Leeds Athletic took on AP Saints in their second game, and it lived up to the hype. AP Saints started better out of the two teams, but Leeds managed to secure the win by a single point to put themselves in a good position to win the group. Next up for Leeds was another tough game, this time against Bramhall. Unlike the AP Saints game, Leeds couldn't come back from a losing position after a bright start from Bramhall, and Bramhall held on for a crucial win in the race for the top position.

The final important game of the group saw Bramhall take on AP Saints. Both teams could still win the group, and the game was the goal for significant periods. Like the Leeds game, AP Saints didn't have the durability to win another tight game, and Bramhall won by a single point and topped the group.

Group C
This group was evenly matched, and most teams believed they could top it. The Eastern champions, Conquerors Sargon, got off to a positive start against Abbey Flyers, winning 11-7. Suffolk Rockets also started well against Yendys, winning 8-5.

After their initial defeat, Abbey Flyers brushed themselves off and recorded an impressive 12-8 win against Suffolk Rockets to get their first win of the competition. Conquerors Amazon started their campaign by condemning Yendys to their second competition defeat.

After the mid-way stage, it looked like the battle for the top spot would be between Abbey Flyers and Sargon, who once again won convincingly. Sargon though were about to be stopped in their tracks by their U14 counterparts Amazon. An unbelievable start by Amazon saw them take a significant lead early on, but Sargon had no response. A shock win that changed the outcome of the final standings significantly.

The final games saw Abbey Flyers end strong and top the group, and Amazon finished second after another impressive win. Sargon was looking to finish on a high after their previous shock loss but fell short against a team they were expected to win against. Yendys, who were bottom, won the game 8-7 to record their first win of the group.

Quarter Final Play-Offs

The quarterfinal play-offs featured some close games, and a significant shock result meant this event lived up to the expectation of delivering the underdog victory.

Conquerors Sargon, AP Saints, and Conquerors Amazon all had to work hard for their wins, and Ryland breezed past Herts Dynamos to safely advance to the quarterfinals.

The big result of the round was Magic defeating Leeds Athletic. Magic had finished fifth in their group and took on Leeds, who finished runners-up in theirs. An incredible start to the game saw Magic race into a 5-0 lead, and they went into halftime in a great position. Everyone expected a Leeds fightback, and that's what we got. A frantic end saw Leeds have the chance to level the game, but some misplaced passes was to condemn Leeds to the 9-14th play-off finals.

Quarter Finals

After Magic pulled off an incredible win against Leeds, they would be on the receiving end of a giant-killing performance themselves. They took on Conquerors Amazon, primarily a U14 side that qualified via the Eastern Finals. Everyone expected Magic to win this tie because they were the older side and also the champions from the South. Amazon started the better of the two sides and quickly moved the ball down the court. Magic was always within touching distance of leveling the game, but they couldn't find enough consistency in the attacking third, and Amazon, against the odds, marched into the semi-final.

In the other ties, the top of the top-of-the-table teams in the groups was now involved. Bramhall won their tie with ease, as did AP Saints. Ryland's reward for defeating Herts Dynamos was a rematch with Sutton Town. Once again, though, Sutton Town was too good and joined Bramall and AP Saints in the semi-finals.

Semi Finals

Bramhall took on Conquerors Amazon in the first semi-final, and they couldn't take them lightly due to their giant-killing victories earlier in the competition. Bramhall, though, had that little bit of extra quality to avoid being another victim of Conquerors Amazon and reached their first-ever Netball Cup Final.

Sutton Town took on AP Saints, and with minutes to go, the game was tied, so both teams had a massive chance of reaching the final. Both teams had chances, but agonizingly, they couldn't capitalise on them, and the game went to overtime.

In overtime, Sutton Town finally found that killer instinct to get the win and set up a final against Bramhall.

3rd/4th Play-Off

What a 3rd-4th Play-Off game this was. Both teams played incredibly well, and the game went to overtime. In overtime, with seconds to go, Conquerors Amazon had the opportunity for one last shot, and the shooter sunk a 14-foot shot to create an incredible reaction from her supporters.

Final

The final was a Netball Cup first. For the first time ever, the two teams that reached the final didn't win their regional round, and both came from the same regional heat. Sutton Town vs Bramhall was going to be a fascinating encounter. Bramhall had the more skillful players, but Sutton Town had the better defensive qualities.

Sutton Town started the game on top and easily got into the shooting circle. The defensive side of Sutton Town's game made Bramhall play more passes than they wanted to, causing mistakes and helping Sutton Town build a healthy lead in the second half.

Bramhall tried everything to create more fluency in their play, and when they did reach the shooting circle, their shooters weren't as ruthless as their Sutton Town counterparts. With the Sutton Town mid-court stopping Bramhall's creativity and then feeding Ella, who was faultless all game under the post, it was a recipe for success.

After just missing out on the final last season, this young Sutton Town side went one better and became the first team from the Midlands to win an ENG Netball National Finals.
